Waite, F.M. - Attended to and carried out a number of wounded men from within fifty yards of the enemy's trenches under heavy fire.' (Wilson p20). Wounded, Katia Oasis, Palestine: 5th August 1916. '...the Katia Oasis was strongly held by machine-guns and a superior force of riflemen... The 5th Light Horse Regiment suffered twenty-eight casualties, and the quality of the leadership was shown that, among the officers, Majors W.F.L. Wright and A.G. Bolingbroke, Captains W. Chatham and J.G.D. McNeill, and Lieutenants R.A.N. Plant and F.M. Waite were all wounded.' (Gullett p172). Wounded, First Battle of Gaza: 26th March, 1917. Lieutenant Waite, who was on the right of the advance, at once wheeled his troop to the right, jumped the hedges still mounted, and got amongst the Turks. Lieutenant Wait [sic] used his revolver until shot through the body in five places, his men firing their rifles from their horses. ...For Lieutenent Waite's brilliant action in this battle, he was subsequently awarded the Military Cross, and Shoeing-smith T. Jones and Trooper S.L. Gofton (A.M.C. Details) were awarded the Military Medal.' (Wilson p97).

They were also subjected to shell fire from one of our destroyers, the commander of which had not been informed that our men were operating outside our own lines.... The Regiment's casualties during the afternoon were heavy, amounting to 23 killed and 79 wounded.' (Wilson p19). See also the record for DELPRATT, Sgt. M.G., taken prisoner. Notes: According to the following account, was shot on 22nd May, while the regiment was digging a trench in rear of Quinn's Post: 'The bullets began coming faster and faster and each man felt mighty glad when he had scooped a hole down three feet and thus had partial shelter. We could dig on our hands and knees now. Then one poor chap, Watson of B Squadron, was shot clean through the head.' (Idriess p11). Name commemorated on the Belmore, NSW, memorial, and on the Lone Pine memorial, Anzac.
