Father was Indent Merchant and Maufacturers' Agent.

Previously served in the 39th Australian Infantry Regiment CMF.

Previously Senior Cadets (March 1913 to Aug 1914). Acted as Area Officer to Military Area 40B (Homebush) Aug 1914 to May 1915.

Joined AIF 18th March 1915.

'Mortally wounded in the head whilst on trench duty at 'Pope's Post' on 29th September. He lingered for two hours and then died at 8 p.m.' (Lance-Corporal F. B. Forster, 226, A Company, 19 Battalion. Luna Park Hospital, Heliopolis, Cairo, Egypt; 29 Oct 1915).

'Mace was hit by shrapnel and killed instantaneously. Witness didn't see him hit but saw the body when it was brought out of the trench.' (D. J. Ryan, A Company, 19 Battalion. Luna Park Hospital, Heliopolis, Cairo, Egypt; 29 Oct 1915).

'Before this reaches you. you will no doubt have heard the sad news about Roland Rogers and Lieut Ralph Mace. Roland was killed a few days after landing in a charge made by the 18th, and I think will be talked about for a long time. It is impossible to get any further particulars. Ralph Mace was killed on 29th September, was hit in the head by Shrapnel whilst in the trenches and died immediately. You may also remember Pt. J. Robinson who was with me on the march down to the wharf. Poor chap was also killed some time ago.' (Pte Roy Richards, 1 Oct 1915: letter to his mother from 'Dardanelles').
